From
the Desk of Brian Sickora...
In
April I mentioned that you would hear more about our
new initiative to facilitate community discussion of important
issues. I'm excited to share with you a new project titled Public
Voices: Connecting Communities that will reinvigorate our
commitment to expanding outreach initiatives to encourage engaged
citizenry.
With
the enthusiastic support of Broome Community College President
Dr. Laurence Spraggs, WSKG will be partnering on the project
with the Center for Civic Engagement located at Broome Community
College. The center was organized and is directed by Doug Garnar,
Professor of History, Philosophy and Social Science at Broome
Community College. Formed to promote and foster political deliberation
in the public square; the center is dedicated to promoting
and fostering programs that encourage attitudes and dispositions
that contribute to public discourse.
WSKG
was selected as one of twelve stations nationally to receive a grant through
the Corporation for
Public Broadcasting (CPB)
Community Engagement Initiative grant program. The aim of
the CPB initiative is to find new ways to help public television
and radio stations become more deeply involved in the civic
life of their communities. The CPB has partnered with the Harwood
Institute of Public Innovation, a nonprofit organization
dedicated
to helping people imagine and act for the public good. The
Hardwood
Institute will be coaching stations - and communities - on
how to put innovative practices to work to drive civic engagement
and change.
We're
still in the early stages of this project, but are tentatively planning
to facilitate focus groups and broadcast the results
of these discussions. Another part of the project will
consist of short pieces about community members who are making
a
difference.
I
look forward to working with you on this important project.
Warm regards,
