This week, Off the Page ventures into a different sort of writing... namely, musical composition. Binghamton native Brian Vlasak, 26, is working toward a PhD in composition at The University of Iowa School of Music. While using modernist and post-modernist ideas in his music, he resists pigeonholing. "I think that we, as composers, are at a threshold where something big is going to happen, philosophically speaking," says Vlasak.

Brian Vlasak joins Gregory Keeler on OFF THE PAGE to discuss the future of music. To ask a question or join in the discussion call during the 1pm live broadcast to 1-888/359-9754 or post a comment by e-mail HERE or directly to WSKG.Radio@Gmail.com.

"The Midnight Band of Mercy" is a novel by Michael Blaine of Jefferson, NY, set amidst refined society, the lower depths and yellow journalism of New York City in 1893. Blaine has carefully researtched the historical period to lend a stark realism to the story of a newspaper reporter investigating a murder while a Midnight Band of do-gooders is killing the city's cats.
